The central theme of the short story “The Adventure of the Speckled Band” by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle is the things that are overlooked in life often prove to be of great value in the end. Doyle uses the protagonist Sherlock Holmes, who uses his attention to detail and deductive skills in order to solve a crime, to develop this theme. While attempting to solve a mystery for Helen Stoner, whose twin sister died in bed one night after hearing a whistle, Holmes knew the importance of paying attention to detail and decided to stay the night at Stoner’s house. Holmes explains, “There are a thousand details which I should desire to know before I decide upon our course of action” (Doyle 15). During his stay in the home and the specific room where Stoner’s sister died, Holmes paid careful consideration to detail and found a ventilator with a bell-rope tied to the bed. After solving the mystery of the death, Holmes says, “My attention was speedily drawn, as I have already remarked to you, to this ventilator, and to the bell-rope which hung down to the bed. The discovery that this was a dummy, and that the bed was clamped to the floor, instantly gave rise to the suspicion that the rope was there as a bridge for something passing through the hole and coming to the bed. The idea of a snake instantly occurred to me” (Doyle 38). Holmes’ attention to detail allowed him to understand that the sister’s stepfather had murdered her by sending a snake through the ventilator down the rope in her room, subsequently biting and killing her. Doyle’s characterization of the protagonist Sherlock Holmes as a detail-oriented detective helps the reader understand his message that paying attention has great rewards.

Importance of Characters
In realistic contemporary fiction the most important element is the characters because the reader should be able to easily relate to the characters. For example, in Romiette and Julio by Sharon Draper the main character, Julio, gets threatened by a gang called the family. They say, "Watch your mouth chico or it might get busted" (Draper 56). The gang is bullying Julio because he is different; this, unfortunately, is relatable because kids get threatened and beat up.
In addition, in the book Boy Mets Boy by David Leviathan the characters are relatable. For example, Paul has a crush on someone and wants to talk to that person more. Paul says, " Its hard to groove when you've got things on your mind. Sometimes you can use the dancing to fight them off. But I don't want to fight this off " (Levithan 4-5). Sometime in people's lives, someone makes them feel a certain way, or the same way as Paul: in a funk. It is easy for readers to connect with Paul because most people have had a crush on someone. Characters are the most important element in Realistic Contemporary Fiction because in each book the characters have relatable characteristics making the reader feel as if they are in the book or can understand it better.
