Happy 2014, Happy Research Paper - 1/5
Hello English 12 Families and Happy New Year!
As we start 2015, your student came back to everyone's favorite time of the year -- RESEARCH PAPER TIME! This year, in an attempt to prepare your student for their next step in life, the research paper will be entirely online. Students will be using my website (www.missaubrey.weebly.com/research1) and Google Classrooms to create their entire research project. The whole project (and month of January) is outlined on my website with due dates and expectations. Today in class, students set invididual goals for their research paper based on previous experiences; these will be taken into consideration throughout the research process and when they turn in their final copy. By creating three of their own goals, in addition to my expectations, students can gain some ownership of the direction of their learning.
The prompt is choose a person, event, or invention of the 20th or 21st century that has most impacted our society. My hope is that students can choose something that means something to them, so the research process is more interesting and they are more invested.
Please let me know if you have any questions, comments or concerns throughout the research process and how I can best help your student!

Goodbye, Canterbury Tales; Hello, Arthur -10/27
Hello English 12 Families!
I cannot believe that we are in the last week of the first marking period! This first quarter really flew by. We are just finishing up our Canterbury Tales unit. Each student completed a character study of a pilgrim in Chaucer's journey. Today they could use their notes from the presentations to take a quiz on the Canterbury Tales. They also had a writing assignment due today, a Heroic Couplet poem, where they wrote like Chaucer in ten syllable rhyming couplets.
I will be using Friday, 10/31 as an opportunity to go over grades for the Marking Period. Additionally, on this day, students will turn in their Please Do Now activities. They should have 15 PDNs for 3 points each, making this a 45 point assignment at the end of the marking period. These are activities that students should be doing each day as they come into class, and if they are absent, these assignments are listed on their weekly agenda and on my website under the English 12 tab --> Please Do Nows.
Throughout the rest of the week, we will be starting the stories of King Arthur and the Knights of the Round Table. We will be reading "Sir Gawain and the Green Knight" and "Le Morte d'Arthur." We will discuss the aspects of romance and Medieval Literature.
Before we know it, students will be taking the first Benchmark of the year. An exam that measures growth from year to year. This comes at the beginning of the second marking period and will count for 10% of each student's second marking period grade.
If you have any questions, please let me know. I hope that you continue to check the website for homework updates, extra information, and spare copies of handouts. Feel free to contact me at any time!

ANglo-Saxons --> Medieval literature - 10/10
Hello English 12 Families!
We are well into October and we have finished our first unit of the year - The Anglo-Saxons, Epics, and Beowulf. Students took their assessment this Tuesday and grades will be updated shortly. After the assessment, students wrote Anglo-Saxon Boasts, the rally cry of these long-ago soldiers, meant to inspire their fellow warriors. Each student wrote a poem about somethine they could boast or brag about. This Tuesday, students received their college essays back with grades and they have until October 17th to make revisions to these essays. I am available before school, after school, and by appointment to conference about student essays.
This week, we have discussed Medieval Literature, Geoffrey Chaucer, and we have started the prologue of The Canterbury Tales. We will read the prologue in class, and each student pilgrim from The Canterbury Tales to analyze. We will be reading the text in class and work on the characterization project, simultaneously.
Outside of school, students should be keeping up with their root word books (a root word is assigned each night for the students to look up, draw a picture of the definition, and list at least three words that correctly use the rootword). These root words can be found in the homework section of my website. They also can review the prologue through the PDF copy on my website. Additionally, there are stretch activities on my website, as well, under The Canterbury Tales tab.
I enjoyed meeting some of you at Back to School Night last week, and I look forward to working with all of you throughout the rest of the year! As always, please let me know if you have any questions, comments, or concerns.

College Essay - 9/12
Hello English 12 Families!
We have successfully completed the first three weeks of school! We are definitely in the flow of learning now! Over the past two weeks we have been working on The College Essay. My hope with this assignment is that students will be able to "kill two birds with one stone": writing an essay for me and having a quality piece of writing to send off with their college application process. The rough draft of the college essay is due on Tuesday, September 16th, at the beginning of class. The final copy will be due Friday, September 19th at the beginning of class. This assignment will conclude next week and we will begin our study of Anglo-Saxon literature with the epic Beowulf.
Please note that I update e-school regularly and that homework is posted every day on my website (www.missaubrey.weebly.com). Just click on the homework button on the homepage or see the homework tab under "More". If you have any questions throughout the year, please don't hesitate to e-mail or call; I look forward to meeting you at Back to School Night on October 1st (convieniently when 1st Marking Period IPRs will be on e-school).
Thank you for your support of your student!

Hello 12th Grade English Families! My name is Kimberly Aubrey and I will be your child's English teacher for 12th grade. First things first, congratulations on making it this far - Senior Year is very exciting! Today was a great first day of school; I enjoyed getting to meet your student! The Summer Reading assessment will take place on 9/2 -9/4 and will count as 10% of each student's First Marking Period grade.
I look forward to a wonderful year with your student.
